The Buganda Kingdom has partnered with the central government to develop and promote historical and cultural tourism sites linked to the 1981–1986 liberation war that brought the NRM government to power.
The sites include mass graves where people who died during the war were buried, as well as the Buganda cultural village located at Kirema in Luwero District.
Officials from the Buganda Kingdom led by the Minister for Culture and Traditional Affairs, Anthony Wamala, together with the Kingdom’s Minister for Lands and Properties, David Mpanga, joined the State Minister in charge of the Luwero Triangle, Alice Kaboyo, on a tour of several historical and tourism sites in Busiro and Luwero.
The visit aimed at exploring ways of upgrading the sites to boost tourism and benefit both the government and surrounding communities.
Among the sites visited were:a mass grave at the Wakiso District headquarters containing the remains of 201 people.
Another grave at Kakiri Town Council headquarters where 250 people were buried ,A mass grave at Mutuba III in Namayumba–Nsangi with over 1,000 victims.Another site at Masulita containing the remains of more than 1,400 people and The Buganda cultural heritage site at Kirema in Luwero.
Speaking during the tour, Dr. Anthony Wamala said the Kingdom was committed to working with the government to transform the sites into attractive tourist destinations.
“The Buganda Kingdom is ready to work with government to ensure these historical sites are developed and preserved so that they can attract tourists and benefit future generations,” Wamala said.
Minister David Mpanga emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the Kingdom and government institutions.
“Strong cooperation between the Kingdom and government will help in developing the country and preserving important historical heritage sites,” Mpanga noted.
Meanwhile, Minister Alice Kaboyo said government would continue collaborating with the Buganda Kingdom to promote tourism within the Luwero Triangle.
“Government is committed to strengthening this partnership so that tourism sites in the Luwero Triangle can attract more visitors and create opportunities for local communities,” Kaboyo said.
